What makes a mobile phone tick?

Duration: 4 Hrs.

Objective: See how ECE theory comes alive inside a cellphone.

Age Group: ECE students, having done elementary courses in Communications and Signal Processing.

Venue: Could be your college itself. We just need a big enough room and some tables.

What is this workshop about?

This workshop is designed to connect the communications and signal processing theory to practice and see how it all comes together inside a cellphone. We give participants a whirlwind tour of what all goes on inside a cellphone, and how the design has been evolving. We also get the participants to get their hands dirty and minds moving, as they take cellphones apart, make some measurements and do some signal processing exercises live in the session using real world signals.

A previous edition of this workshop, at the National University of Singapore, can be found here.

What will the participants gain from this?

As we go through the workshop, the participants understand how a cellphone is built. They see what are the companies that supply the components and how the entire system comes together. They also get some invaluable practice with using tools like MATLAB to perform signal processing operations and analysis.

Do the participants bring something with them?

Some old/discarded cellphones, a laptop (with MATLAB) or some other signal processing tool installed and a whole lot of curiosity.
